"FRODE GJERSTAD/KEVIN NORTON/DAVID WATSON - Tipples (FMR 299; UK) This is unique trio features David Watson on electric guitar, Frode Gjerstad on alto sax & clarinets and Kevin Norton on vibes, marimba & drum-set. I know that Frode and Kevin have played and recorded together on several occasions but this is the first time either have worked with Downtowner (& former New Zealander) David Watson, also known as fine bagpipes player and someone not so well-recorded. Right from the gitgo, this is tight, high-end improv at its most exciting.
This trio is extremely well balanced and tight as they work together and interact quickly. Mr. Norton switches between marimba, vibes, drum-set and assorted percussion at a moment's notice, reacting quickly and twisting different patterns inside out. Some sections are quite violent and intense and explosive yet the trio remains focused, speeding up and slowing down together. When things calm down, like on "Ripple", different textures and sonic combinations emerge and draw us in, in un expected ways. I've caught David Watson playing improv nights & in game pieces with John Zorn and Ikue Mori on occasion. He is an impressive player on electric guitar. Keir Neuringer Trio (Philadelphia/NYC):
New music from the trio of Keir Neuringer (alto sax), Shayna Dulberger (double bass), and Julius Masri (drums and percussion). Masri and Neuringer have improvised together as a duo since 2012, when Neuringer relocated to Philadelphia. They first played with Dulberger earlier this year. Expect ecstatic collective improvisations and new compositions by Neuringer.
Keir Neuringer is a saxophonist, composer, writer, and anti-oppression activist based in Philadelphia, with ties to creative music scenes in Krakow and The Hague. His double-length solo album Ceremonies Out of the Air (2014) has received critical acclaim, with favorable comparisons to inspirational figures Evan Parker and Albert Ayler. He has performed solo throughout Europe and North America, shared the stage with William Parker, Misha Mengelberg, Ingrid Laubrock, Evan Parker, Red Trio, and long-time collaborators Rafal Mazur, dj sniff, and Ensemble Klang, and released music on the New Atlantis, Not Two, and For-Tune record labels. Shayna Dulberger is an upright bassist who has been living and working in NYC since 2005. Dulberger has performed throughout North America and Europe and has worked with many artists including William Parker, Bill Cole, Jonathan Moritz, and Ras Moshe. She has been an upright bassist since 1995 and attended Manhattan School of Music Preparatory Division in High School and graduated college from Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University. Dulberger has released three albums as a leader. Time Out New York wrote "Led by bassist Shayna Dulberger, TheKillMeTrio [SR/2006] is one of the stronger avant-jazz groups we’ve heard in some time." Her second album "No more than a patch of wilderness is The Basement Recordings uniformly beautiful and vibrant" said New York City Jazz Record. In a review of her third album Ache & Flutter the Chicago Reader wrote "Dulberger provides the music’s muscular backbone: she drops assertive accents, judiciously prods her cohorts without getting in anyone’s way, and contributes seething solo work that hints at the playing of one of her mentors, William Parker".
Julius Masri is a percussionist and circuit bender, and is a performer/ composer for Philadelphia's modern dance community at large. As a drummer, he can be seen playing in such bands as hasidic punk group Electric Simcha, psychotic Ragtime duo Mahogany Stompers, free-rock trio Lionshead, thrash metal duo Night Raids, Van Sutra with guitarist George Draguns (Don Caballero), and improv situations with reed player Keir Neuringer, guitarist Nick Millevoi, and many more. He also performs on circuit modified keyboards in Superlith with trombonist Dan Blacksberg (Deveykus, Anthony Braxton Quartet), and with Philadelphia based electronic music heroes Charles Cohen and Joo Won Park.
