Drexel University’s Jazz Orchestra has teamed up with the Spelman College Jazz Ensemble to continue a series of jazz shows with a unique twist. The two ensembles will perform Jazz Extravaganza XV, an annual concert featuring compositions made famous by masters of the jazz tradition, on Thursday, March 13 at 7:00 at the First District Plaza (3801 Market St.)
The Drexel University Jazz Orchestra, directed by Dr. George L. Starks, Jr., will present “Honoring the Tradition - Musicians from HBCUs,” as a tribute to musicians who attended black colleges and universities. One of the little known stories in the history of jazz is the role that historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have played in the development of the music. The repertoire of the Drexel performance features the music of greats such as Cannonball Adderley, Ernie Wilkins, Oliver Nelson, Frank Foster, Erskine Hawkins, Jimmie Lunceford, Joe Newman, and Don Pullen.”...
