Jazz Bridge presents their “Second Thursdays Neighborhood Concerts Series-Jazz at Foster’s Military Lodge,” 351 Charleston Rd, Willingboro, NJ 08046. The second concert in this series features trombonist, Don Collins & son James Collins on keyboards on Thursday, November 12. Don Collins is an in-demand trombonist in the Philadelphia area and was recently honored to receive the 2014 Philadelphia Clef Club Jazz Award. He began his musical studies at age seven on piano, took up euphonium, then trombone, at age nine. His teachers have included euphonium soloist Brian Bowman, award-winning “Saturday Night Live” trombonist Steve Turre, and Philadelphia Orchestra principal trombonist Glenn Dodson. Don was previously a lecturer in Jazz Trombone in The Esther Boyer College of Music at Temple University. Collins has performed with a host of diverse artists including Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Johnny Mathis, The Temptations, The Spinners, The Four Tops, Harold Melvin's Blue Notes, The Chi-Lites, Cuba Gooding, Sr., Major Harris, The Delfonics, James Moody, Stanley Clarke, Jimmy Heath, Steve Wilson, Bootsie Barnes, Terell Stafford, John Walsh, Tim Warfield, Joey Defrancesco, Trudy Pitts, Michael Pedicin, Jr., The Dells, the O'Jays, and many others. He’s performed at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center, done a number of television guest shots, and has recorded with everyone from Boyz II men (on their gold “Boyz II Men” recording) to Bunny Siegler. Previous venues have included the Bahamas Jazz Festival, The Capital Jazz Festival, The Capital Jazz Festival Cruise, the Kennedy Center, and Carnegie Hall. Television appearances have included, The 70's Soul Jam and Boyz II Men: Motown Live, and Emeril Live with the Doc Gibbs band. He has recorded for numerous pop, R&B, jazz, gospel and Latin artists including a gold record with Boyz II Men, for the album Boyz II Men: Nathan/Michael/Shawn/Wanya. Other recording credits include: The City Rhythm Orchestra, The Urban Guerilla Orchestra, Cintron, and Bunny Sigler. This past June, Collins participated in the world premier performance of Pablo Batista’s original suite, ‘The Journey,” at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts.
