Ben Winkelman Trio

Pianist Ben Winkelman just released a beautiful album.

Lucky for us, he’s bringing it to @exuberance. This is the fifth album for Mr. Winkelman, who moved to New York in 2010 from Melbourne, Australia. His second album, The Spanish Tinge, won the AIR Award for Best Independent Jazz Release and his third and fourth albums were nominated for AIR Awards. His latest work Balance explores his interests in Afro-Cuban, gospel and classical music with a focus on Latin rhythms in odd meters.

Bassist Desmond White is yet another transplant from Down Under who moved to NYC for post-graduate work at Manhattan School of Music. He now performs regularly with New York-based artists including Gilad Hekselman, Nir Felder, Camila Meza, Shai Maestro, Ari Hoenig, Matt Wilson, Marko Djordevic, Barney McCall, Sean Wayland and many others....

Obed Calvaire joyfully lights up every ensemble he plays with—like the SF Jazz Collective, Dave Holland, Sean Jones, Brian Lynch, Monty Alexander, and the Clayton Brothers Quintet (my favorite). He has performed with large ensembles such as the Village Vanguard Orchestra, the Mingus Big Band and the Bob Mintzer Big Band. Performing with Lizz Wright, he has participated in major jazz festivals such as the North Sea Jazz Festival at The Hague, the Vitoria-Gasteiz Jazz Festival in Spain and the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal. He last appeared here @exuberance memorably with John di Martino.
