About

Please join Ars Nova Workshop for the first Philadelphia performance since 2007 by Chicago improvising unit The Engines, featuring the saxophonist Dave Rempis, the trombonist Jeb Bishop, the bassist Nate McBride and the drummer Tim Daisy.

“Without being pressured to be a steamroller at all times,” writes Philadelphia City Paper, “these Engines can guide the machine with surprising finesse, and the compositions, contributed by all four, embrace that freedom with abandon.”

Initially formed in 2005 as a trio with Rempis, McBride and Daisy, Bishop joined the group the following year. All leading voices from Chicago's improvised music scene, the four have worked in various projects with Mats Gustafsson, Roscoe Mitchell, Hamid Drake, Jason Adasiewicz and Nels Cline, and in groups such as Ken Vandermark's Territory Band, Rob Mazurek's Exploding Star Orchesra, Peter Brötzmann's Chicago Tentet, Ballister and Vox Arcana.

The Engines is a leader-less quartet; each member brings original compositions to the table in order to foster what the group calls an “equal music relationship.” The group's eponymous debut album was released by Okkadisk in 2007, and its second was Wire and Brass, a live recording also released by Okkadisk. The Engines next album, a recent live set performed at Chicago's Hungry Brain with the late saxophonist John Tchicai, will be released in 2013.
